Life is too short for bad movies..

AdULTHOOD (2008)

Posted by Sid On June - 18 - 2009

adulthood Cast: Noel Clarke, Danny Dyer, Scarlett Alice Johnson

Director: Noel Clarke

First and fore most, you should definitely watch KiDULTHOOD first. Then you will feel really excited about this sequel. I was still feeling the vibe from the first so this one had to step up in order to shine.

The writer of KiDULTHOOD, and the director of AdULTHOOD are the same and he even plays the role of Sam in both parts. As KiDULTHOOD was more daring, more defined and thrilling, AdULTHOOD comes with more of a sentimental and conclusion like. The “shot of vodka before breakfast” fades away but in a necessary manner. I enjoyed the music less and the quality of the cut scenes seemed a bit lower then before, nevertheless after watching this I felt like something has been completed.

I find it hard to give you a good review without spoiling anything, but I will say that these two movies are really like two episodes in the same series so they can’t go one without another. Sam becomes the main character as he is released from prison 6 years after his crime. The action happens through a couple of days as well and we get a short view of what life has become for the kids after 6 years with a special focus on Sam and his struggle to escape the skeletons from his closet. If KiDULTHOOD featured a bunch of ignorant brats, AdDULTHOOD shows us those brats grown up into conscious people who realize the consequences of their actions.

I felt refreshed after these last two movies just because of the simple fact that both of them were not as predictable as one would expect. When you think “…Now somebody will die…” they don’t and the other way around.

To finish things off, AdULTHOOD is a bit more sope-ish however it comes as a great completion to KiDULTHOOD which was more ruthless and raw.

By the way, the ending is left open so who knows …

I was thinking at the differeces between the movie made in 2006 and this one and I found them in the cast and the production. Half of the flavor of Kidulthood was erased by the fact that the main character was also the director. In fact, “Sam” was the writer of both “Kidulthood” and “Adulthood”. Also it is weird that all major movie sites rated higher the sequel.

As a curiosity Noel Clarke (Sam) is filming for the movie “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll” that will appear at the end of 2009.

Nice to have documented people commenting…

It’s tough to say coz the first movie was missing exactly what the second brings to the table but without keeping almost anything from the first… both put together and maybe a stronger finale might have a bigger commercial smash…

There are rumors about another sequel, but Clarke said in an interview:

“No, there won’t be a Fatherhood, or a Pensionhood,” he says. “The reason the poster shows a sunset and the baseball bat on the floor is me saying, ‘This is done. I don’t want to write anything else in this vein’.

I still believe that IF the price is right a third part could come. If not by Clarke then someone else could buy him out and try something
